SOUTH Gloucestershire councillor Peter Tyzack is to fight for a place in Parliament next year.
Cllr Tyzack has this week been nominated as the parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats for the new Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency.
At the next General Election, to be held in the spring, the existing Northavon constituency is to be divided into two new constituencies, Filton and Bradley Stoke, and Thornbury and Yate.
Cllr Tyzack said: "I am honoured to have been chosen by the party to represent the people in this new constituency for the next General Election. I would like to say thank you for the support that I have already received and the further encouragement since my selection especially from Steve Webb MP."
The Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency will include Winterbourne, Hambrook, Frenchay, Bradley Stoke, Filton, Patchway, Almondsbury, Severn Beach and Pilning.
Exisitng Northavon MP, Steve Webb, will stand as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Thornbury and Yate.
Mr Webb said: "Knowing the hard work and dedication that Peter has put in during his many years of public service for the council I am convinced that he has what it takes to make a an excellent local MP. He has the determination to continue fighting for the things that local people need."
Cllr Tyzack, who is South Gloucestershire councillor for Pilning and Severn Beach, has been a member on the authority for 15 years and is currently chairman of the development control committee.
He is also a member of the European and International Forum and represents South Gloucestershire Council on the Severn Estuary Partnership, which he help to establish.
Cllr Tyzack has lived in Severn Beach since 1987 where he has helped to found the Pilning and Severn Beach History Group and the Severn Beach Regeneration Group. As an active walker he also leads a monthly walk to ensure country paths around the village remain open and accessible.
"What I would like to do is to offer a real alternative for the people of this new constituency. With just over five months left to run to the General Election, Filton and Bradley Stoke is a rare opportunity for us," he said.
