HELICOPTERS will be used to keep a close eye on the region’s electricity network over the next few weeks.
Central Networks, the electricity distribution company for central England, is using hi-tech photography to keep a close eye on its overhead network during a month-long maintenance programme.
Jim O’Sullivan, director of infrastructure services at Central Networks, said: "We’re running a series of patrols using a helicopter with a high-resolution digital camera which will take photographs so detailed we can zoom in on every nut and bolt.
"We have more than 48,000km of overhead cabling across central England, so using helicopter patrols is the safest and quickest way we can examine the pylons and poles that form part of our overhead network.
"This important work allows us to plan our maintenance work more effectively and to spot any potential hazards before they become a problem."
