CHIPPING Sodbury defeated Oldlands and the weather to clinch a crucial win which moved them to the top of A South in the Greene King IPA Gloucestershire County League.
On a day when rain had the final word and washed out the club's three other sides, play was possible on the main pitch at The Ridings where the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.
Oldlands though found the going extremely hard going and battled their way to a total of only 72-9 from their 38 overs as all the home bowlers found a testing line and length.
Ed Holden, on his return to the first team, claimed 3-3 from four with skipper Jamie Rendell (2-9 from eight), Ben Waldron (2-22 from eight), Dan Brown (1-7 from eight), Oli Morris (1-14) and Josh Morris (0-8 from seven) all keeping the pressure on.
In reply, the Sodbury opening partnership of former captain Craig Scully (42) and Jake Reed (29) knocked off the required runs in less than 14 overs.
This result enabled Sodbury to leapfrog previous leaders Cam who went down by two wickets at Rockhampton.
Sodbury now prepare for a trip on Saturday to Cam who they lead on net run rate.
Sodbury B will be home to Bristol Sri Lankas with the Extras entertaining St Mary Redcliffe and the Extra Extras travelling to Chippenham.
