So saddened to belatedly learn of John's death last May. We met John in 2015 on a long cruise and again on subsequent cruises. We were concerned not to receive any response to emails and found this announcement. Such a gentleman in every sense. A gentle and kind spirit with an insightful view of the world. Also a creative and humourous man as witnessed in this "happening" recorded in 2015 - no link allowed so to view search on YouTube for "The Bell Videartify"! So glad we met John and so sad he is no longer with us. Our sincerest sympathies to John's family and friends. Juliet Lunn and Alan O'Cain.

Cousin John is fondly remembered for his passion for architecture and his skills as a photographer. Family visits to see the beautiful garden at ‘Greengates’ in the 1950’s and ‘60’s were special occasions – as were the Wilkes’ return trips to Newbury. After caring for his mother (Auntie Peggy) in her later years we have enjoyed hearing of John’s many holiday cruises. He will be missed by family and friends.

So very sad to hear the news of John’s passing. The Shapland family lived next door to the Wilkes family for over 35 years and became close friends. As a young boy in the 1950s I can still vividly remember playing with John and his older brother Rob. I also have memories of John’s amazing bedroom train layout running around his room (including the door - when closed!) of which I was very jealous!! In latter years John and I exchanged Xmas cards. Happy times remembered with John. With deepest condolences to the Wilkes family. Don Shapland.
