THE organisers of a Chipping Sodbury street party are appealing to local businesses to help fund the community celebrations.
The committee behind the June 2 event, which will be called Sodbury Celebrates – The Big Lunch and will take place in Broad Street on the same day as the national Big Lunch initiative and the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s coronation, are looking for funding to cover costs.
Committee member Alexandra Womack said: "We have a number of costs including the closure of Broad Street, public liability insurance, marshals and First Aid cover we are looking for help with.
"We would be happy to print the logo of any local business which would be willing to sponsor the event on all publicity."
She said the event followed the hugely successful Sodbury Jubilee Celebrations in 2012 which hundreds of families turned out to enjoy.
"The street party during the two days of celebrations in Chipping Sodbury last year was so well received we thought it would be a real shame not to capitalise on that display of community spirit and hold another event this year," said Alexandra, the Gazette's Yate and Chipping Sodbury reporter and co-chairman of St John’s Mead Primary School PTA.
"But whereas last year street closure fees were waived for the Diamond Jubilee and other donations were forthcoming, this year we need help from businesses and organisations in Chipping Sodbury to make the event happen."
On the day, people will be encouraged to bring their own tables, chairs and gazebos and either enjoy their own picnics or purchase food from the local pubs and eateries which will be holding outdoor stalls and barbecues.
A stage will host a line-up of entertainment and there will be a children’s fancy dress competition and a miniature garden competition.
"After the Jubilee and the London Olympics last year, 2013 looked pretty dull in comparison but this event will give everyone the chance to get their bunting out once again and enjoy a good old fashioned street party in style," added Alexandra, 32.
"This is an event organised by the community for the community but it won’t be possible without the community’s help."
If you or your business would like to sponsor the event or make a donation email alexandra.womack@hotmail.co.uk or call 07740 370586. Cheques should be made payable to Sodbury Celebrates – The Big Lunch.
