CHIPPING Sodbury breezed to a 129-run home victory over Frocester 3rds to leapfrog Cam and finish top of Division A South on the final weekend of the Coronavirus-shortened Greene King IPA Gloucestershire County League campaign.
Sodbury started the day two points behind Cam but ended it seven clear thanks to their comfortable win and a four-wicket reverse for Cam at home to Frampton-on-Severn.
Sodbury were always in the driving seat against a young Frocester line-up, Sourish Mukherjee hitting 35 before his dismissal brought together Craig Scully and Josh Morris who went on to share an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 158.
Scully’s 83 came from 90 balls and featured seven fours and two sixes while Morris’ 79 was off 63 balls and included seven fours and three sixes.
Ben Waldron (2-34) and Dan Brown (1-19, both from six) then made early inroads with the ball for the home side before skipper Jamie Rendell got to work, capturing 5-26 from eight to ensure his side ended the summer on a high.
The spinner said: “It’s very pleasing to play some cricket and finish top of the group after wondering for a long time whether we would have any games at all this summer because of the pandemic.
“We’re thankful to everyone who helped make this season possible. We were able to put out four senior sides most Saturdays and it’s also been a busy time for our juniors and our ladies section so there’s a tremendous amount to build on for next year.”
Sodbury 4ths, meanwhile, slipped to a 52-run home reverse against touring Bridgend Town but there was a nine-wicket success for Sodbury Under-11s at Hambrook.
Prarthana Reddy top scored on 36 (retired) for Chipping Sodbury Girls under-15s away to Frampton-on-Severn who went to complete a three-wicket win despite Kate Poulton taking 2-12.
