YOUNGSTERS in Thornbury can now bike to school in greater safety thanks to a new cyclepath.

The existing route along the town's Streamside Walk has been converted into a shared cycle and pedestrian path, linking Crossways Infant and Junior schools.

The work has involved widening the path near the school and at narrow sections, repairing damaged sections and cutting back overhanging greenery. New signage has also been erected.

Cllr Brian Allinson, South Gloucestershire Council's executive member for planning, transportation and the strategic environment, said: "By making improvements like these, children will be encouraged to cycle to school rather than go by car.

"The council is committed to improving the safety for schoolchildren and encouraging them to walk or cycle to school where possible.

"This is one of more than 20 schemes aimed at improving routes to schools due to be carried out this year."

The new route is part of the Crossways Travel Plan. Earlier this year new covered cycle parking was introduced at the junior and infant schools so pupils could leave their bikes safely during the day.

Crossways Junior headteacher Janet Raven said: "The changes have been popular with pupils who are now able to use a safer and more pleasant route to school.

"As part of our school travel plan we are trying to encourage children to cycle to school and the new cycleway will play a key role in helping us achieve this."

Streamside Walk runs along the banks of Thornbury streams for around a mile and a half and is well known for its flora and fauna.

The traffic-free walkways are jointly managed by Thornbury Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council.
