Over the last fortnight our readers have been nominating the top 15 takeaways in Cam and Dursley, Thornbury, Yate and Sodbury.
For the next three weeks we’ll be profiling each of them so you can choose the Gazette Series Best Takeaway 2021 winner.
This week we’re showcasing Thornbury venues, the third of which is The Swan Thornbury, which has been a feature of the High Street for ten years.
Landlady Sandra Davies wasted no time taking on takeaways when the pandemic struck, starting a collection and delivery service from scratch just two days after the first lockdown was announced by Boris Johnson.
“I saw one of my regulars walking past and I thought ‘what are they going to do for dinner?’” she said.
“I’ve never done takeaways on a mass scale before, but on that Sunday morning I put up a Facebook ad saying I’m doing takeaway dinners and I’ve never looked back - worked every day since.”
Her most popular dish is Sunday roast, with customers regularly placing more than 100 orders for the meal each week.
Asked what it meant to her to make the top 15, Sandra said: “I’m really pleased because it’s not something I knew about and it’s nice to be recognized.”
“I would be pleased to win. I’m not a cook at the end of the day but I’ve been going in there and starting from scratch with one simple Facebook advert, and it’s recognition for volunteers who deliver the food.”
The back wall of the Swan dates back to 1659 and there is only one other building in the area that was built prior it, which is Thornbury Castle.
If you think this historic pub should be crowned the best takeaway, you can vote for them using the voting coupon in this today’s paper (Thursday, March 25).
