TRANSPORT chiefs are to fully reopen a popular commuter link in Hambrook closed during rush-hour times.
Filton Road was closed - during weekdays between 7.30am and 10am - three years ago after mounting concern it was being used as a rat run' by commuters wanting to avoid the nearby Avon Ring Road.
But the move was branded a disaster' by people who claimed the rush hour closure of the road had increased traffic congestion in nearby villages and affected the business of Hambrook's only shop.
Campaigners in Frenchay and Winterbourne rallied support for the lifting of the traffic restriction, collecting a 300 signature petition on the way.
To add weight to their campaign they highlighted a survey showing 78 per cent of pre-closure traffic was still using the road despite the closure.
They finally persuaded South Gloucestershire Council to drop the closure last year but were then left disappointed when the implementation was delayed.
Now, the Conservative-run council says it wants to lift the traffic restriction as a matter of urgency.
Cllr Brian Allinson, cabinet member for planning and transport, said: "We made a clear commitment to local people that if we were running the council we would promote the re-opening of Filton Road and that is what we plan to do.
"It is clear from the very high numbers of people who ignore the closure that the local community does not accept it because they believe it to be a major mistake.
"I hope that the reopening of Filton Road will reduce congestion in Frenchay and improve the quality of life of local people, which is our objective."
Bob Pullin, owner of Pullin Stores, on Filton Road, has claimed the rush hour closure has drastically hit his business.
He said: "The sooner this road is opened the better. I used to depend on the morning traffic for early business, now that has all gone.
"It is quite clear to everyone, particularly local people, that the decision by the previous council to close it was a disastrous mistake. We can't wait for it to now be undone."
