DANGEROUS parking outside a primary school could be solved by a 'walking bus' scheme.

Hopton Road, in Cam, has been branded "very dangerous" by a district councillor because parents park on the narrow road to drop their children at Cam Hopton School.

Cllr Brian Tipper, district councillor for Cam and an ex-policeman, said: "Over the years the parking in Hopton Road has become beyond a joke, it is very dangerous.

"It is just an accident waiting to happen. I would hate to see a child get knocked over there, it would be just terrible."

Cllr Margaret Nolder, county councillor for Cam, is negotiating with Tesco in Cam and Hopton School to set up a scheme to combat the parking problem.

If it is agreed, parents could park in Tesco car park and their children would be walked to school by several parent volunteers.

"The walking bus would get children to school and back safely and hopefully solve the parking issue in Hopton Road," said Cllr Nolder.

"Children seem to like walking to school, they can chat to their friends and get themselves ready for school during the walk instead of getting out of the car and straight into the classroom.

"It is also very healthy for the children, so we would be tackling lots of issues at once."

Gloucestershire County Council is also considering installing a pedestrian crossing near the Railway Inn, in Station Road, which would make the journey safer.

"There have been negotiations in the past with Tesco and they have agreed to let the parents use their car park and I believe some parents have indicated that they would help supervise the walking bus if it was arranged," said Cllr Nolder.

"If we can get this scheme going it should go a long way in helping to reduce the problems in Hopton Road."
