MOTORISTS in Gloucestershire are being reminded to take extra care on the roads during bad weather.
The police are reiterating this advice as the wet and windy weather is forecast to continue this week, and flood watch and flood warnings are in place on some rivers in the county.
Any poor weather can make driving hazardous and road users are asked to exercise caution before starting a journey. Drivers should travel at a speed appropriate to the road conditions, and allow extra time for completing their journey. Motorists are asked to: * Tune into weather and travel bulletins before and during journeys.
* Be aware of the potential of changes in side wind effects when passing, or being passed by, large vehicles or when entering/leaving areas of natural protection, such as bridges, wooded areas, large walls or hoardings.
* Try and avoid roads known to be affected by surface water and to be aware of the hidden dangers in standing water i.e. man holes that may have been exposed.
* Test the brakes of the car if it has been absolutely necessary to drive through standing water.
* Keep the wipers on and de-mist at all times.
* Ensure you have plenty of fuel, fill up a hot flask and take plenty of water, a blanket, torch and shovel if making an absolutely essential long journey.
The Constabulary would like to reassure members of the public that it, along with supporting agencies, is constantly monitoring weather conditions and is ready to respond to any incidents that may arise as a result of the conditions.
