MUSICIANS from a school with a prestigious musical pedigree are visiting the Gazette area next weekend.
On Saturday, January 26 (7pm), St Giles Church, Uley, will be hosting a concert by a quartet from St Paul's Girls' School, London.
The school, founded in 1904 (with origins in the 16th century), has always had a flourishing music department with some famous composers as Directors of Music, among whom were Gustav Holst, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Herbert Howells. Gustav Holst wrote The St. Paul's Suite' (1913) and The Brook Green Suite' (1933) for his pupils to play; and much of his very well-known suite The Planets' was composed in his room at the school.
The Neale String Quartet consists of Natasha Neale and Carin Nakinishi (violins), Camilla Thompsell (viola) and Alice Leach (cello).
Local promoter Pauline Thomas said: "The Neale Quartet has been delighting audiences for the duration of its eight years at St Paul's Girls' School - in fact three of the members have been playing together since the age of six..
"The quartet appears regularly in concerts throughout the school calendar, are in great demand for light music both in school and outside events, and most recently gave a performance at the Lady Mico's Almshouse in Limehouse."
The programme in Uley will open with The Fifths, a quartet by Haydn.
The second piece in the programme is Rosamunde', a quartet by Schubert.
The recital will last approximately one hour. There will be no interval. All are invited to stay for wine and canapés after the concert. Tickets are available from Uley Stores or on the door.
The entire proceeds of this concert will benefit The Uley with Owlpen & Nympsfield Organist Fund.
