A hoard of 61 post-Mediaeval coins found by a metal detectorist on land near Dursley in September has been declared treasure by a coroner today (Dec 16).
The silver coins are all 17th century and from the reigns of King Charles II, James II and William III
The assistant Gloucestershire Coroner Roland Wooderson said the coins were found by a local man, Simon Hall, using a metal detector on ploughed land at a location which was not divulged in court.
"There are 61 coins ranging from the reign of Charles II and the eldest was 1698 during the reign of William III," said the coroner.
"The conclusion is that as a find of more than one silver coin over 300 years old and all found in close proximity to each other is qualifies as a hoard."
The coroner said the owner of the land had given permission for Mr Hall to search there.
Conclusion: Treasure.
