POLICE have launched a crackdown on vandals after more than 20 cars were damaged in one Yate street.

Officers are calling for calm and for motorists to be vigilant following the spate of "mindless vandalism" in Bredon at the weekend.

At least 24 cars were damaged overnight between Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20. Most had the paintwork scratched by a key.

Neighbourhood Inspector Caroline Howard said: "This is mindless damage. These cars have all had the paintwork deeply scored by a key or something similar.

"This has caused people no end of inconvenience and it's sad that anyone would think this sort of behaviour is fun.

"I would ask those responsible to think about the people who have been affected by this.

"They won't have the car while it's repaired and may struggle to get to work, school and do all the other things we rely on our cars for like getting to hospital.

"Even with insurance, these victims will still have to pay out the excess and could see their premiums rise."

Police delivered letters to all residents in the area this week asking for witnesses and any further victims to come forward.

The incident in Bredon follows six reports of wing mirrors being damaged in nearby Blaisdon on Saturday.

Insp Howard said worried residents could consider forming a Neighbourhood Watch group and urge the reporting of anyone seen acting suspiciously.

Anyone with information on the vandalism should contact Chipping Sodbury Police Station on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
