A MUM has walked more than 30 miles to help pay for a dream trip for the brother of a young man who died of cancer.
Katie Curran walked from Old Down near Thornbury to Cardiff with her friend Fay Bowyer, to raise money for a family to take their nine-year-old son to Disneyland after his older brother died of cancer.
Rhys Langford, was just 19, when he lost his battle with osteosarcoma - a type of cancer which starts in the bones.
Katie and husband Paul are close friend with Rhys' family.
Before his death, the brave teenager from Ebbw Vale near Abergavenny in Wales raised over £60,000 to pay for life-saving treatment of a fellow child cancer patient.
Now, friends of the family have begun fundraising once again, this time to help Rhys' family take his younger brother Charlie on a trip of a lifetime, to Disneyland.
Mum-of-two Katie and friend Fay decided to walk rom Katie's home in Old Down to the Velindre Cancer Centre, a distance of over 30 miles raising money for Charlie's trip and for Cancer Research UK.
So far the duo have raised just over £2,000.
On Saturday, April 2, the two women set off from Old Down at 5.45am and walked the distance to arrive in Cardiff 13 hours later.
Parents of the women met them at a number of checkpoints along the way of the gruelling walk.
"It wasn't easy at all," said Katie.
"The distance was actually a lot further that we anticipated but we want to do something to help and after Rhys' heroic battle and his selfless fundraising to help another boy, I just felt compelled to do something.
"It meant everything to us that Catherine and Paul- Rhys' parents said they were proud of us and that they couldn't believe we were doing it for them and that spurred myself and Fay on to keep walking mile after mile."
A number of businesses supported Fay and Katie. Go Outdoors gave them 30% off of their kit and The Crusty Loaf, a bakery they went into en route, gave them some free food and drinks to keep energy levels high.
"We can't thank everyone enough for their support and donations. We just wanted to do something special for Charlie like Rhys did for someone else," Katie added.
