TWO little girls from Yate have raised over £400 for Ukrainian refugees by selling sweets to local schools and sports clubs.

Four-year-old Esme and her two-year-old sister Maggie have so far raised £415 to support Ukraine after selling sweets at Esme's school and Yate Rugby Club.

The girls set themselves a target of £150 and have almost trebled their initial goal in donations for the British Ukrainian Aid charity.

Mum Lauren Slogan, a designer, said Esme was listening to the radio when she heard about the situation in Ukraine and wanted to help them, she decided selling sweets would be a good way to make some funds.

"Esme was so sad and asked why the children have had to leave their homes, with no toys and no beds," said Lauren. "She decided she wanted to do something to help and came up with creating the sweet bags.

"We initially took them to the rugby the girls sold a massive amount at a training session for Yate rugby club.Maggie had come along for the ride but was the best seller at the rugby day!"

Maggie who is currently at nursery and Esme who attends Abbotswood primary school then starting selling to family and friends before going into Esme's school for more sales.

"Both girls have done an amazing job at creating each sweet bags and selling them to raise this money and I am so proud of them for what they have achieved and how much money they have made for the children in Ukraine"
