STUDENTS have been planting trees as part of a school’s new sustainability initiative.
Pupils from Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School in Wotton have planted a new woodland crop in their school grounds thanks to trees donated by the Woodland Trust.
KLB's new sustainability plan, which includes tree planning, new bird boxes, a new wildflower meadow, and sympathetic hedgerow management, aims to reduce the school's environmental impact.
The scheme is being led by its geography department and environmental club.
In recent years the Wotton School has installed solar panels on its rooftops, replaced inefficient boilers and single-glazed windows, and installed LED lighting throughout much of its building.
KLB has also launched a multi-million rebuild programme which will see new carbon-zero buildings built.
“Educating young people goes well beyond the classroom,” said Hannah Khan, acting KLB head teacher.
“It is about nurturing the whole child and providing opportunities to enrich their lives through a range of opportunities.
“The students involved in this tree planting project will be working together to make a long-lasting difference to the environment.
“We hope that initiatives like these might encourage students to take greater care of our planet in years to come.”
