A VILLAGE church is celebrating its 300 year anniversary this year. 

St Mary's Church in Kingswood, near Wotton, has been an active place of worship since 1723. 

The historic anniversary is being marked with a variety of different events from Saturday, May 27 to Sunday May 28. 

Churchgoers and families are commemorating the historic anniversary with a village trail, services, free fish and chips, and a new book which has been given to Kingswood Primary School pupils.

Revd Rick Williams said: “In 2023, St Mary's Church in Kingswood is three hundred years old. 

“Since 1723, it has been a building in which Christian worship has been held, and where the message of Jesus Christ has been taught.

“As part of our celebrations, on Saturday, May 27 2023 we will be organising a trail around Kingswood and using places in the village to suggest stories about Jesus from the Bible. 

“At each of these places there will be activities for adults and children. The trail will end at the church where there will be a free fish-and-chip supper, based on the story of the feeding of the 5,000. 

“The trail opens at 2:30pm, and the fish-and-chip supper at 5:30pm.  All activities (including the food!) are free.

“To support the story, a special book has been produced, telling the story of Sophie and Joe and their travels around Kingswood, "Looking for Jesus".

“The following day Sunday, May 28 on Pentecost Sunday at 11am there will be a special celebratory service led by the Bishop of Tewkesbury, followed by a party, to which all are invited.” 

Built in The Georgian era, St Mary's - which is grade two listed - is one of very few churches in England built during the reign of George I.
