A NEW mini supermarket is set to open its doors in a busy petrol station forecourt in Stonehouse.
A small Waitrose shop - known as Little Waitrose - will be opening later this year inside the Shell Oldbury petrol station.
The site is currently under construction after Stroud District Council granted Shell planning permission in October last year to demolish the existing shop and rebuild a new kiosk with more floor space.
The company has since submitted a second application for the installation of new signage around the facility, including signs displaying the Shell, Costa, and Little Waitrose legos.
A Shell spokesperson has now revealed that the entire site is due to reopen in three months time.
“The site is currently closed for works, it’s due to reopen on Thursday, September 7, 2023 and it will have a Waitrose convenience store.
"Works began on Monday, March 20."
The new store will be the district's third Waitrose, with one already on London Road in Stroud and another at Michaelwood Services along the M5.
The petrol station is located near Great Oldbury, where around a thousand new homes have almost finished being built.
The site is also near Travelogue, Subway, and Starbucks, and is part of the Oldbury service station at junction 13 of the M5.
Other plans as part of the redevelopment include installing a new cycle rack and air and water machine and removing the car wash.
In addition, works include building new accessible toilets and improved car parking, with 11 spaces and four electric vehicle charging points.
Meanwhile, the forecourt will also be updated, but the number of vehicles that can be fueled at once will drop from 12 to six.
Eastington Parish Council previously said they had “concerns about reduction in the number of petrol pumps; could give rise to increase in queues on the roundabout.”
The planning decision report from October reads: “The site is an existing long- established filling station in need of an upgrade in order to meet customers needs and bring the facility up to date.
“The upgraded petrol filling station will continue to meet the needs of motorists through the provision of fuel and EVC as well as selling essential items including for the residents of the adjacent residential development of Great Oldbury.”
