PLANS have officially been unveiled to demolish a warehouse building in Thornbury to make way for a new Lidl supermarket.
A public consultation has been launched by the national retailer to create a new store along Midland Way as part of a multi-million-pound investment.
The proposed development site is currently occupied by clothing supplier Alexandra Workwear, and once relocated, a new Lidl would replace it.
Patchway, Yate and Stroud were previously the closest Lidl locations to Thornbury.
Proposals include creating a bakery section, customer toilets, 95 parking spaces plus two EV charging points as well as six accessible spaces, a covered cycle rack, and a pedestrian access point.
It is believed up to 40 new full and part time jobs would be created as part of the scheme.
In addition, a new pedestrian access would be created from Midland Way, as well as a main vehicle and site entrance off Whitebridge Gardens.
The store’s roof will also have solar panels to help power the store.
Lidl GB’s head of property, Glen Stidever, said: “We are excited to unveil plans for a new Lidl supermarket which would provide residents in Thornbury and the surrounding area with convenient access to our high-quality produce available at the best value.
“Representing a multi-million-pound investment, the proposals also include the creation of new jobs for the community.
“We are keen to gain feedback from as many people as possible to ensure the plans best meet their needs ahead of submitting a planning appli-cation.
“We look forward to sharing and discussing our plans with everyone.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Alexandra Workwear said: "After an extensive search of the area we are pleased and excited to be moving into a new office and continuing our long-standing Alexandra relationship with the Bristol area.
"Our new location is just a few miles away, with great transport links, and has been greeted with enthusiasm by our Thornbury based colleagues"
The consultation reads: “Lidl is proposing to make a significant investment into Thornbury which will increase local shopping choice, providing our famous high quality products at competitive prices to help with the rising cost of living.
“Lidl intends to demolish the existing warehouse building once Alexandra Workwear has relocated and replace it with a modern, fit-for-purpose new foodstore.
“Once you have reviewed our website, we would love to hear what you think about the plans.
“We will submit a new planning application in the coming weeks.”
