Students and staff at The Castle School in Thornbury are celebrating a "remarkable" set of GCSE results today.

The 265 students have had three years of their secondary education disrupted by the pandemic and sat exams with no additional support measure in place nationally.

Despite these challenges, 79 per cent of the students have successfully achieved the key measure of standard passes in both English and Maths, with 55 per cent obtaining a good pass in both.

Headteacher Joe Docherty said: “We are all thrilled for our students achieving these excellent results.

"They reward our students for their fantastic work ethic and resilience over their time at secondary school with us.

"The reality is that this means so many more students are able to take up their preferred next steps in their education and career paths.

"We wish all of our students the best of luck and success on the next stage of their journey and we look forward to welcoming many of them back, along with many students from Marlwood School, to our joint sixth form in September.”

Staff were also particularly proud of the results achieved by Amaury Perez Martinez, Ihnat Kopylov, Max Davis and Alice Goodman -  in each case they are sure that their families and friends will be just as proud as they are of their achievements.

The school had three students tied for highest achievement, with Kaite Lyons, Ellen Sayers and Daisy Townson all achieving nine top-grade 9s (awarded to the top 5 per cent nationally in each subject) and one grade 8.

Abbey Bonnett and Justine Yeung also obtained eight top-grade 9s respectively.

A further thirty seven students achieved at least one or more grade 9 in at least one subject and in total, across the cohort of 265 students they managed to achieve a total of 569 grade 7s, 8s or 9s which is an incredible feat.

Headteacher Joe Docherty added “The Castle School has been on a journey of upward improvement over the last 4 years, which was confirmed by Ofsted in November 2021.

"These results add further evidence of this continual improvement.

"I’m very proud of the work of all the staff in supporting our students, they regularly go above and beyond to ensure our students get the care and support they need to flourish and I thank the parents for working so positively with us to enable this success.
