THE husband of a woman who died in a car crash at the weekend has paid tribute to his caring wife and described her as a "remarkable woman".
Halla Kamel, 45, died instantly when her car flipped onto its roof at a traffic blackspot during heavy rain on Sunday night.
The mother-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene on the B4509 at Tortworth but her 12-year-old son Omar, who was a passenger in the car, escaped unscathed.
Mrs Kamel's grieving husband Mohammed told the Gazette: "Halla was very caring. She always had time for people and would help anyone in distress.
"She was very close to all her family and did so much with the children. She was a remarkable woman."
Mrs Kamel, originally from Cairo in Egypt, lived in Edgeworth, Yate, for the last 17 years with her husband and their two children Omar and daughter Jasmine, 16.
She was well known in the local community as someone who always had time to help and her neighbours were said to be distraught on hearing of her death.
A devout Muslim, Mrs Kamel was a volunteer teacher of Arabic at a Saturday school in Bristol.
She was training to become an accountant and had just taken her final exams at Filton College.
Her nephew Tim Elbehiry said: "She was loved by everyone. She was unique and will be missed by everyone."
Omar, a pupil at Brimsham Green School in Yate, was trapped in the front of the car and had to climb out the back to escape.
He stopped a passing motorist and then called his father for help.
Mr Kamel, 58, a taxi driver for Chipping Sodbury firm Grab-a-Cab, praised his son for being so brave.
"Omar is in shock but didn't have a scratch on him," he said. "We were very lucky and I am proud of him."
Mrs Kamel had left the M5 motorway at Junction 14 after meeting with friends and family in Gloucester.
She lost control of her red Peugeot 406 whilst negotiating a bend near the entrance to Tortworth Primary School at 7.43pm.
Sgt Craig Ogborne, of Thornbury Police Station, said: "Police, fire and ambulance all attended the scene where they found a car on its roof.
"The female driver suffered from a serious head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 12-year-old passenger was uninjured in the crash."
The road was closed for several hours and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact the collision investigation unit on 0845 4567000.
Sgt Ogborne added: "That stretch of road, particularly outside the school, has been a policing priority for us for some time now and we have been working with other bodies to see how we can improve safety.
"It is a dangerous road that has become an accident blackspot for the area."
