A DATE has been set for Thornbury's resurrected summer carnival.
Supporters behind the movement to re-establish the social event have proposed Saturday, July 4, 2009.
David Goldring, a retired teacher, who is behind the carnival revival, said: "I have lived in Thornbury since the 1970s and I can remember there used to be a carnival with a procession, and now as a town we have decided to give it go again."
Mr Goldring made the proposal to reinstate the carnival to Thornbury's Chamber of Commerce in May and has received the committee's full support.
The last Thornbury Summer Carnival was held at the Mundy Playing Fields in 1996, but despite a 13-year absence Mr Goldring is now hopeful to get the rest of the town on side.
"It is really too early to have any real detail at this stage but it is important to secure the date and make sure it is free of competition from any other local event.
"It can be as big and as inclusive as people want it to be but if no groups come forward it won't happen," said Mr Goldring.
The carnival is not intended to raise funds for any particular project but different groups that take part can use it to help boost their own causes.
Mr Goldring said: "We hope to approach local flower groups and the allotments and garden groups to ask if they would get together to do a collective event.
"We would also like to have a display of military vehicles, involve local Guides and Scouts, have a fun fair, sports events, a stage with musical performances and a procession if anyone would like to co-ordinate one.
"We want to be inclusive and would be happy to let any organisation in the town have a role. We are really open to suggestions and offers of help."
Organisers hope to hold a public meeting for any interested parties in September.
Anybody or any groups who would like to get involved in next year's Thornbury carnival should email David Goldring at thegoldrings@hotmail.com.
