LONG delays are expected this evening due an ongoing “police incident” in South Gloucestershire.
It is understood the M49 is currently closed southbound between the M4 junction 22 and the M5 junction 18.
A statement from National Highways reads: “The M49 in Bristol / South Gloucestershire is closed southbound between the M4 J22 and the M5 J18 due to a police-led incident.
“Emergency services including Avon & Somerset Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.
“The M5 J18 southbound exit slip road is also closed due to this incident.”
National Highways have issued this diversion route
- Continue eastbound on the M4 until J20 (Almondsbury Interchange)
- Take the M5 southbound and then continue onward journey towards the South West
Latest update - the road was eventually reopened at 6.30pm last night.
Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement they were responding to a "concern for welfare incident".
