AN appeal has been launched by a charity in Gloucestershire to help a “sweet” and “playful” poorly Dalmatian.
It is believed 7-year-old Diego is suffering from an immune system disorder called masticatory muscle myositis.
The pooch is currently being looked after at Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home in Cambridge - near Dursley.
Staff say when Diego came into their care they noticed significant muscle mass by his cheeks and temples.
This condition can go on to cause excruciating jaw pain, making simple joys like eating, chewing, and playing with toys unbearable for affected dogs.
A fundraising appeal has now been launched as staff are planning to give him a short general anaesthetic for muscle biopsies.
It is hoped the results will reveal whether inflammation is present and help staff produce a tailored treatment plan for Diego’s comfort.
Beth Barker, CDCH animal care assistant, said: “Diego is an incredibly sweet and affectionate boy, and getting to know him has been a delight.
“He's extremely playful, always ready for a game of tug-of-war or fetch, but above all, he cherishes spending time with his favourite people.”
A spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, we have a very sad case and a plea to our supporters for Diego the 7-year-old Dalmatian who recently came into our care.
“Diego is a very sweet-natured boy and thrives on human companionship.
“We are asking for your support to help Diego, your generous donation will fund his biopsy procedure and subsequent treatment that may be needed, providing him with the medical care he deserves.
"Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a huge difference in Diego’s journey."
