YOUNG artists have transformed two ‘eyesore’ bus shelters in Dursley with bright and colourful designs.

Before work began, the two stone bus structures in Kingshill Road near Rednock School had been targeted with offensive graffiti.

Organisers from Dursley Town Council decided they wanted to develop a new art project to revamp the shelters with Rednock School and Cam & Dursley Creatives.

A competition was then launched at Rednock, with the town council eventually choosing two winning designs made by students.

Designs were then developed by Create Gloucestershire with the help of professional street artist Matt Tanner during a number of after-school workshops.

The two winning artworks feature an underwater theme inspired by awareness ribbons and a landscape inspired by the view from the back of the school.

Dursley mayor Alex Stennett said: “It's great to see transformations like this where the
Council can make use of the wealth of talent in our local students and artists.

“I look forward to what I hope will be many more such projects."

Rednock teacher Laurie Moir said: “The excitement has built over the last six months with students designing, sketching and practising street art with Matt.

“We learnt techniques and can control how to make stencils and mapping large art pieces onto a surface.

“The students were amazed to see the transformation from white bus stop to background colours and outlines.

“Then it was their turn, with a little apprehension they started and with encouragement from Matt were soon spraying confidently.

“The day was a blur of stencils, freehand spraying, music and colour!

“An amazing experience from start to finish where we all learnt so much.”

Headteacher Mike Stratford said: "We are absolutely thrilled to see the culmination of the Bus Shelter Project!

“The students' dedication, creativity, and hard work have truly shone through,  resulting in a wonderful addition to our local community.

“It has been hugely rewarding collaborating with Matt, Debs, Abi and the local community on this project.

“Together, they have created something that not only serves a practical purpose but also brings a touch of brightness and joy to our neighbourhood.

“Their efforts have paid off spectacularly, and we couldn't be prouder of what has been
accomplished.

“We are confident that their work will bring smiles to many faces for years to come."
