A MUCH-loved annual event in Thornbury has revealed it has had a change in leadership.
Thornbury Christmas Lights Association has appointed Sally Higgins as its new chair.
Sally, who has volunteered with the group for more than 10 years, succeeds Brian Roberts.
Brian had previously served as chair of the festive group for the last 25 years.
Under his leadership, the Thornbury Christmas lights switch-on event has become a feature of the town’s festive celebrations.
Events have also raised thousands of pounds for local organisations such as Young Lives Vs Cancer, BRACE Alzheimer’s Research and Great Western Air Ambulance.
Sally said: “I am very honoured to have been voted into this role and I will try my very best to fill the big boots left by Brian.
“We are grateful for the new volunteers who came forward last season but continue to look for new volunteers which will allow us to continue to provide Thornbury with a Christmas lights display to be proud of.”
She added: “I am really looking forward to my first season in the chairperson role, is it too soon to say ‘see you at the switch-on?’!”
A group spokesperson said: “We are immensely grateful for Brian's years of service and dedication.
“His hard work and passion have helped to create a magical experience for everyone in Thornbury each Christmas.
“He has been our voice of reason and without his perseverance I am not sure our organisation would still be going.
“We are glad that even with his change of role, we get to keep Brian around for a little while longer as he continues to lead our street team.
“The Thornbury Christmas Lights Association is committed to continuing its tradition of bringing festive cheer to the community and raising as much money as we can for local organisations.
“With Sally at the helm, the association is poised to introduce new and exciting elements to the annual displays and event, ensuring it remains a cherished event for all.
“Our team has already started refurbishing the lights ready for the Christmas period.”
