A COMMUNITY hedgehog house decoration day in Thornbury has been labelled as success as part of a new green scheme.

More than 30 members of the public attended the event at the Town Hall and decorated six hedgehog homes.

The event was part of Hedgehog Awareness Week - with the boxes due to become new homes for the prickly animals in green open spaces in the town.

At the end, there was a draw for participants with one lucky family winning a hedgehog house kit and wildflower seed bombs.

A spokesperson from Thornbury Town Council said: “Over the past few months, we have been trialling a new management plan for its open spaces, aiming to make them better places for both humans and animals alike.

“The town council also supported No Mow May, a campaign encouraging reduced mowing of grassy areas to allow wildflowers to flourish and provide food and habitat for pollinators.

“Additionally, the adjusted mowing regime includes leaving certain areas uncut for extended periods to further enhance biodiversity.

“We have also installed bird boxes, bug hotels, and hedgehog houses across our open spaces, providing living spaces for local wildlife.

“Among these initiatives, the town council invited the community to help decorate hedgehog houses, aiming to connect people with nature and foster a sense of stewardship.”
