FURTHER celebrations are being held to mark 150 years of Sharpness New Dock.
Sharpness 150 is a programme of community events running throughout the year to celebrate the history of the dock, which opened on November 25, 1874 and was an event which transformed local lives and industry.
The next event is a Maritime Enthusiasts’ Day on Saturday, August 17 at the Sharpness Sports & Social Club, Sharpness Docks, GL13 9UN - formerly the Dockers Club).
With free admission, the event features displays, models, books and memorabilia from leading maritime enthusiast societies and retailers.

- Paddle Steamer Preservation Society
- MV Balmoral Group with their large scale model
- Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA)

- Refreshments, bar, free parking
Sharpness 150 is also creating a lasting accessible online heritage and educational resource, preserving insights and personal stories across the generations.
A spokesperson said: “Following a highly successful launch event, Sharpness 150 continues its celebrations throughout 2024.
“Following our Maritime Enthusiasts’ Day we’ll be staging the Sharpness 150 Sea Shanty Festival in September.”
"Sharpness 150 is a collaboration project led by volunteers from the local community, the Vale of Berkeley Railway Charitable Trust (VoBR) and Stroud Vintage Transport and Engine Club (SVTEC), with support from the Canal & River Trust, the Gloucestershire Heritage Hub and local historians."
"We welcome further involvement from local businesses, charities, organisations and visitor attractions."
