MORE details have been revealed about the £650k swimming pool revamp in Thornbury.

The pool at Thornbury Leisure Centre will be temporarily closed for two months, say officials.

It will be shut from Monday, November 4 and eventually reopen on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

The Circadian Trust - which runs the Thornbury centre - says the project includes essential and ‘unavoidable’ maintenance works.

The works will include installing a new pool air handling unit with full heat recovery, which will save energy and carbon emissions.

The pool hall will also be refurbished and additional tiling will be added to the pool walls.

All lighting, windows and internal and external doors will also be replaced to maximise energy efficiency.

The pool is also well known in the town for its multi-coloured circular pods that hang from the ceiling – known as ‘the Smarties’.

These will be undergoing a respray, having not had their colour updated since their installation in 1978.

South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the building and facility, has contributed around £500k to the costs.

Meanwhile, the Circadian Trust says it is investing the remaining £150K to the scheme.

During the works swimmers are being asked to use nearby pools at the leisure centres in Bradley Stoke and Yate.

Mark Crutchley, CEO of Circadian Trust said: “Thornbury swimming pool is a hugely popular part of our community and has been for 46 years.

“It is vital that we keep our facilities to the standard that both our member’s expect and that, along with our council partners, we as a trust want to provide.

“Our project team will be particularly looking at bringing environmental improvements that will contribute to the ongoing eco-standards we strive for.

"We look forward to reopening in the new year.”

Cllr Adam Monk, cabinet member responsible for resources at SGC, said: “People love Thornbury’s pool.

"The ‘Smarties' are legendary!

“We thought it was really important to make a substantial contribution towards reviving the pool and making it more climate friendly.

“It’s a place people go to get fit and have fun, and that shouldn’t be taken for granted.”
