A CHERISHED landmark in the heart of Slimbridge is set to be restored.

Listed tombs in St John’s Churchyard will undergo restoration thanks to a generous grant of £116,000 from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, with thanks to National Lottery Players.

The funding will support the renovation and restoration of 24 listed tombs, the historic railings, and the church gates, ensuring the preservation of this vital piece of local history for future generations.

The churchyard is home to numerous monuments that tell the story of the village’s past.

With these renovations, the community aims to enhance the site’s historical and cultural value while also promoting biodiversity.

To celebrate this exciting project, an open event will be held today, Friday, October 25 at St John’s Church from 12pm to 4pm.

The event will provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to learn more about the history of the churchyard, the planned renovations, and the importance of conservation.

Attendees will have the chance to meet the conservation team responsible for the works, who will answer any questions into their work and the techniques they will employ to preserve the listed tombs and gates.

In addition refreshments will be served, creating a welcoming atmosphere for the community to come together and engage with the ongoing restoration efforts.

The renovation work has already begun, with careful consideration given to the materials and techniques used to ensure the authenticity of the historic features is maintained.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the open event to contribute their thoughts and share their stories about St John’s Churchyard.
