A GOOD spell of spring sunshine was just what was needed for horticultural show entrants vying for a trophy.
Competitors at the Slimbridge Horticultural Spring Show turned up with armfuls of beautiful flowers, which had bloomed just in time for the show on the weekend thanks to the sunshine over the last month.
Norma Griffiths, chairwoman of the Slimbridge Horticultural Society, said: "The fine weather in the weeks up to the show, especially the show week was much appreciated, it is usually wet and windy, so the quality of all the blooms was especially high and much admired by the judges.
"The standard of entries in all classes whether flowers, cookery, handicrafts, or floral arrangements was very good and the children’s entries showed a lot of talent."
Competitor Carole Jeffes swept the board in everything from floral exhibits to rhubarb and vegetable seedlings.
Judge Syd Reed said that her pot plant Lachenalia Alioides was better than two others he had seen at the Royal Horticultural Society show recently. She was awarded the Tom Goatman Cup for most points in show.
Mrs Griffiths added: "The refreshments room was full all afternoon with visitors enjoying the homemade cakes with their tea and coffee. Thanks to all helpers for making the show a great success."
