A BROWNIE leader from Westerleigh has been named in this year’s list of community heroes.

Michelle Spratt, the dedicated unit leader of the 5th Westerleigh Brownies for several years, was one of four young people to be named in South Gloucestershire Council’s community awards 2009.

Michelle was awarded a certificate to mark her achievements at a ceremony in Filton last week.

She is currently mentoring three young leaders by sharing her knowledge of the unit to help secure the future of the Guiding movement in the village.

Cllr Brian Freeguard, chairman of the council, handed out the awards to more than 20 community heroes.

He said: "The community awards are our chance to recognise and show our appreciation to volunteers who have provided a fantastic contribution to our community in South Gloucestershire.

"It is also particularly rewarding to see a number of young people amongst the winners whose selflessness is truly inspiring."

Other unsung heroes praised on the night included a special joint award to Sue and Bob Allen in recognition of their long-term support to the family and friends of lesbians and gays in South Gloucestershire and Bristol.

Pamela Forrest and Mary Hurford-Jones picked up a special long-service joint award for their involvement with Cancer Research UK Thornbury and District Committee.

A long-service award was also given to Graham Howell, a leading figure at Yate Athletics Club for more than two decades. As chairman, Graham has developed the club to include children as young as five in a junior academy, through to veteran athletics and activities for the disabled. He also coaches athletics for a number of organisations.
