GREEN-fingered enthusiasts in Thornbury are continuing their efforts to make a garden of Eden in the town’s centre.

The Thornbury Community Garden Group have recently been awarded a grant for more than £300 by mobile company O2 to help clear up land surrounding the Turnberries Community Centre on Bath Road.

Last year the group successfully relocated the town’s popular community garden to ground at the Turnberries. The garden boasts a display of fossils from Aust cliff, a mosaic hopscotch and a solar powered water feature.

However, now this project is almost complete the garden group has taken on more land at the Turnberries to transform.

Adrian Jones, chairman of the Thornbury Community Garden Group, said: "What we have done is taken on the Turnberries’ surrounding garden so as well as the community garden we have area near to the youth centre at the side.

"What we have been doing at the community garden is almost finished now and what we would like is for local groups like play schools to come in and use it.

"What we are hoping for this new garden is that people will just come in, walk through and enjoy the plants and flowers.

"This grant we’ve got is great for us and will cover the cost of the seeds that we need to start planting.

"We’ve already cleared the area and now we hope to start planting next week."

The £375 grant was given by O2 through the company’s It’s Your Community scheme.

It’s Your Community is aimed at financially supporting small community projects which benefit the community or build community spirit. Grants from £100 to £1,000 are available.

Since the programme was launched in July 2007, O2 has given away more than £1.2 million to 1,548 community initiatives across the country.
