A YEAR long study into harnessing tidal power on the River Severn has rejected the controversial 10-mile barrage.
The inquiry, which was commissioned by the regions Liberal Democrats, concluded that a combination of smaller scale schemes would be better for the region’s economy and environment.
The report, A Tidal Solution – The Way Forward, supports the building of a smaller barrage near to the second Severn crossing, known as the Shoots Barrage, but also the development of a pilot lagoon, research into a tidal reef and an investigation into wind turbines on the Severn.
Steve Webb, MP for Northavon, who announced the inquiry’s findings, said: "We think we need a combination generation from lagoons and the small barrage.
"We want the mix of something that can happen relatively quickly and protects the environment.
"Climate change is with us now and renewable energy is on the Severn waiting to be used."
