THOUSANDS of people turned out on Saturday for the ‘We Love Wotton’ celebrations in the town.
Virtually every organisation, shop, club and society in the area was involved in the day’s festivities, which aimed to unite a community in these harsh economic times.
An overcast day soon cleared to bathe the streets in sunshine so that the crowds were able to enjoy spectacles such as the full town band and Morris dancers under a clear blue sky.
"I’ve never seen so many people in Wotton at once," said Janet Walshe, who was one of the organisers.
"There were tables and chairs out in Market Street and it was extremely difficult to get into the town hall, where terrific displays included hundreds of postcards, all with the same ‘We love Wotton’ theme.
"The photographic exhibition was of a remarkably high standard, with entries from tinies, grown-ups and everyone in between.
"One of my own particular highlights was the chapel at Synwell, who held a coffee morning. They also had a visit from the mayor, and they were so happy to be involved.
"Everyone counted and everyone had a part to play, and even the little touches were special.
"All the shops went to huge lengths – there was not a single window left unthemed for the day, which was a terrific effort in these tough times."
In the evening, an event was held in the Town Hall to round off the day’s festivities.
"It was a sell out," added Janet. "The Dramatic Society and the Katie Elliot Trio provided superb entertainment. It was the perfect end to a perfect day."
Photographs of the We Love Wotton day will go on display around the town and a location is currently being sought for an exhibition of the winning competition photographs.
The Wonderful Wotton Sheep on show in Wotton-under-Edge over the weekend are still on display at various locations in the town. Call 07813718651 for details.
