DREAMBOATS and Petticoats is described as the ultimate British rock’n’roll musical – and with over 40 hits performed during the show few could argue.

Set in 1961, emotions are running high as young musicians Norman and Bobby, played by former Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman and Scott Bruton from the X Factor, compete for stardom and the hearts of their female fans.

Meanwhile Laura, portrayed by Daisy Wood-Davis, is the 16-year-old seeking affection and a musical career, and Jennifer Biddall is the femme fatale Sue, who uses her charms to get what she wants.

David Cardy plays Bobby’s supportive dad and will be recognised from his roles in Birds of a Feather and The Bill.

All members of the cast deliver accomplished, vibrant performances while the sets provide an impressive backdrop.

Although the storyline cannot be described as strong, the audience were there to hear the music of Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran and other legendary names of the era, and they were not disappointed.

In between the hits the dialogue does raise plenty of laughs, include a swipe at attitudes that can cause a recession – showing that some things have not changed too much in the last 40 odd years.

An impressive cast delivering a string of timeless hits will ensure Dreamboats and Petticoats remains a hugely popular musical.

It is on at the Hippodrome until Saturday. For more information see www.kenwright.com or call Ticketmaster on 0844 847 2325.
