A COMMUNITY hall in Thornbury has had a facelift after 130 years thanks to an anonymous benefactor.
The hall at Thornbury United Reformed Church has recently undergone a transformation, which has included a new floor, new lights, extra heating, improved roof insulation and a lick of paint.
Rev Stephen Lewis, minister at the church, said: "With time the hall had become shabby and drab. Paint was peeling, water had seeped into the plaster, the wooden floorboards had started to splinter. The place was cold and draughty and hard to heat.
"For a long time the church members had wanted to do something to remedy this, but felt there was nothing realistically they could do to bring it up to an acceptable standard because of the costs involved.
"Then an anonymous gift arrived. So the hall, which had looked derelict, has now been transformed."
The church is keeping the price tag of the refurbishment under wraps after the full cost of the work was met by an anonymous benefactor.
The hall is already back in use with the Thornbury Radio Club and the Thornbury Community Theatre regularly meeting there.
