RURAL homeowners in South Gloucestershire are being urged to secure their property following a rise in burglaries.
Police in Chipping Sodbury have issued crime prevention advice after a spate of break-ins were reported.
Acting Sergeant Neil Whyman said: "We have noticed a slight increase in rural burglaries and attempted burglaries.
"They have been in Badminton and the Chipping Sodbury area. Unfortunately most of them were due to insecure windows."
He said residents should always leave valuables out of sight and make sure doors and windows are locked when they are not in the room.
In particular, police are urging women not to leave their handbags on windowsills as they are seen as ‘easy pickings’ for criminals. Other tips include taking car keys to bed.
Added Sgt Whyman: "We do not know if it is the same people targeting these areas, but residents should try and make it as difficult as possible for opportunist burglars."
