POLICE in Thornbury were inundated with calls during the half-term holiday after teenagers embarked on a drink-fuelled rampage through the town.
During the week calls to the police included an assault, criminal damage to buildings, underage drinking, stones and eggs being thrown at properties and vandalism.
A 44-year-old man, who had been using the sports facilities near The Castle School, was assaulted by a group of five teenagers and suffered minor injuries at 9.30pm on Wednesday, May 27. Police are currently looking at CCTV footage.
Reports were received about a group of eight teenagers openly drinking from a litre bottle of whisky in St John's Street at 8.30pm on Thursday, May 28.
A window was smashed at a property in Leaze Close overnight between Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29.
During the evening of Friday, May 29 properties in The Close were written on using lipstick.
Teenagers were also believed to be approaching shoppers in Thornbury High Street asking them to buy alcohol on their behalf.
Last week the Gazette reported how the paddling pool in the Mundy Playing Fields had to be closed to the public because broken glass was found in it after the Bank Holiday weekend.
Officers are now calling on parents to take more responsibility for their children.
Sgt Craig Ogborne, from Thornbury Police Station, said: "Parents have got to be responsible for their children when they are out and about."
He added: "The message we would like to send to the parents of Thornbury is 'Do you know where your child is and what they are doing?'
"We are being forecast a long hot summer, there were problems last year at the Mundy Playing Fields and the facility has been temporarily closed to the public already this year after the first hot weekend.
"I am concerned this is going to escalate throughout the summer and even though there are additional police patrols of the Mundy Playing Fields and surrounding area, we cannot be there all the time.
"I would ask all parents to intrusively supervise their children and ensure they are not misbehaving or causing a nuisance to other people living in Thornbury."
