A COUPLE of crime drama enthusiasts from Almondsbury have been getting a behind-the-scenes look at local police.

Julia and Nick Turpin, from Almondsbury, recently spent the day on a tour of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) at Avon and Somerset Police to see how real life crime-fighting is done.

The pair won the experience after bidding for the package at a charity auction in aid of the Willow Foundation.

Their prize included a visit to Avon and Somerset’s air support unit, the underwater search team, a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) team and lunch with Detective Chief Superintendent Geoff Anderson.

Mrs Turpin said: "We bid for this day because it was so different and unlike some of the other lots, this was a real money-can't-buy experience.

"I've always been interested in CSI-type programmes, my favourite was Quincy and so this was bought for my birthday. We never realised how much work was going on and just how specialist some of it is. We have had a really fabulous day."

The Willow Foundation provides special days out for 16 to 40-year-olds who are living with life-threatening conditions giving them the chance to escape the pressures of their daily routine and share quality time with family and friends.

The charity was set up in 1999 by former footballer Bob Wilson and his wife after their daughter died of cancer.

Detective Chief Superintendent Anderson said: "Often the Force supports local charities by giving donations and this time instead of a donation we chose to offer a tour of CID.

"I am pleased that Julia and Nick have enjoyed their day and that we have been able to support such a worthwhile cause."
