A PRIMARY school has been praised by Ofsted inspectors for creating a "harmonious" environment where children flourish.

Stone with Woodford Primary is celebrating after Ofsted awarded the school an ‘outstanding’ grade after its recent inspection – the highest grade that can be achieved.

Staff were praised for their teaching skills, which the report said were at times "inspirational".

Inspector Mary Harlow said: "Stone with Woodford is an outstanding school; it is indeed a harmonious place where the quality of education and care is of a high calibre.

"All at this small community are working exceptionally hard to do the best for the pupils. As a result, pupils flourish and their personal development is outstanding.

"Relationships between the adults and the children are admirable. This ensures exemplary behaviour."

Mrs Harlow continued: "Teaching is consistently good; on occasions, it is inspirational. Consequently, the pupils respond enthusiastically, concentrate well and work hard.

"The curriculum is a special jewel in the school's crown. Every effort is made to provide the children with practical, motivating experiences that stimulate their thirst for learning."

The report also said that leadership and management at the school, which has 86 pupils, was excellent and that the head teacher, Kim McCalmont, "cares passionately" for the children and their education.

Dr David Joyce, chairman of governors, said everyone at the school was absolutely delighted with the report, but that the governors were not surprised as the grade reflects the excellent Key Stage 2 results the school achieved this year.

He said: "The governors were particularly pleased that the inspector recognised the tremendous work of the head teacher Mrs McCalmont and all her team, in providing a very rich curriculum going well beyond the 'Three Rs'."

Mrs McCalmont added: "We are delighted with the outcome of the Ofsted inspection. It reflects the hard work and commitment from the staff, children, parents and community to our school.

"The judgement is made about not just one day but our continuing strive for improvement to achieve our mission statement - to educate for life."
