THE 2010 Thornbury Carnival has already received a stampede of support 12 months before it is due to take place.

Organisers of the newly resurrected Thornbury Carnival have said they have been inundated with offers of support and groups wanting to take part in next year’s event just days after this year’s carnival took place.

Stephen Poole, from the Thornbury Carnival Committee, said some pledges of support were being made before the cleaning up had even started.

He said: "On the day a number of stall holders wanted to book their stands for next year and reserve advertising space in the 2010 programme.

"One senior member of a large company with a local branch promised sponsorship if the event went ahead next year and visitors from as far afield as Neath, Birmingham and Portsmouth stopped at the organisers reception desk to say how much they'd enjoyed the day."

The resurrected carnival, which was held for the first time in 14 years on July 4, attracted more than 10,000 visitors to the town and was instantly hailed a success by all who attended.

More than 1,000 people took part in the street procession and there were 130 stall holders on the Mundy Playing Fields.

Despite wanting to attract the thousands organisers have admitted they were a little overwhelmed by the turnout.

Mr Poole said: "Because of the larger than expected crowd and the hot weather, the beer tent was drunk dry having sold 3,000 pints by 6.30pm and had to close shortly after when the wine ran out."

The team behind the Thornbury Carnival are now looking for more supporters to get involved in next year’s event to repeat this year’s success.

An AGM is due to be held in October for more people to join and a date of July 3, 2010, has already been set for next year’s carnival.
