A TEAM of doctors who treat people with epilepsy at Frenchay Hospital has won an award for its work transforming lives.
The Bristol Complex Epilepsy Service, which helps patients suffering from severe types of the illness, won the Transforming Services Award at the National Health and Social Care Awards held in London.
The team was put through to the national finals after winning the regional South West award earlier this year.
Consultant neurosurgeon Dr Sam Lhatoo said: "We are really pleased to have gained this recognition for our patients who have entrusted their care to us."
The team has transformed the care and treatment they provide to patients by using the very latest technology available including state-of-the-art brain stimulators and new generation MRI scanners. The results show that more than 70 percent of patients are freed from severe seizures.
The team was handed the award by sports presenter Gabby Logan.
Medical director of North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Frenchay Hospital, Dr Chris Burton said: "This success really does show what fantastic and pioneering work is being done by NBT staff at our hospitals."
