STAFF and pupils at a school in Thornbury have been celebrating the end of term after receiving a 'good' rating in their Ofsted report.

Manorbrook Primary School was visited by government inspectors just days before the end of term earlier this month.

Michael Sutherland-Harper, Ofsted inspector, said: "This is a good school. There are strengths in pastoral care and relationships and in the sense of community, which ensures that everyone is prepared to contribute to school improvement.

"Behaviour is good and pupils enjoy their lessons, as demonstrated by good attendance and the high quality work on display."

The report praised the leadership and management of the school as well as the full range of extra-curriculum clubs on offer to students.

The school was also congratulated for its academic standards and achievements.

"In the national assessments at the end of Year 2 in 2009, the school’s preliminary results were average and improving in all areas following a recent downward trend. The provisional results of pupils at the end of Year 6 in 2009 indicate that standards are likely to be above average."

Manorbrook Primary School was given two areas to improve. These areas were to ensure consistency of marking and to improve pupils' knowledge and understanding of the world in the early years stage.

Angela Evans, head teacher at Manorbrook Primary School, said: "We were very pleased that the inspectors listened to us and were able to see the really good things that there are about our school.

"The one thing about the report is that it is a reflection of the whole school community. It is certainly a great tribute to the staff and the really hard work they put in. It also reflects well on the pupils and shows they enjoy their education and how well behaved they are.

"The report also acknowledges the parental support we have here. We are very lucky as a school to have so much parental support with everything we do.

"We were particularly pleased with the comments in the personal development and well-being section. Though academic standards are important to us we very much care about developing students all round."
