PEOPLE living in Thornbury awoke to a winter wonderland this morning after up to three inches of snow fell overnight.
Many schools across the district were closed including The Castle School, New Siblands and Crossways Infants in Thornbury, Charfield Primary, Tortworth Primary, Marlwood School and St Helen’s Primary in Alveston, St Peter’s Primary in Pilning and Almondsbury Primary.
Transport was also disrupted because of the weather, as the treacherous conditions forced many people to stay at home.
First Great Western suspended its service between Bristol Temple Meads and Severn Beach. The train company also reduced many of its other services and many buses were also cancelled in South Gloucestershire.
There were also restrictions at junction one, Aust, of the M48, toward the Old Severn Bridge.
The Highways Agency was advising motorists only to make essential journeys and if travelling was necessary to check the weather forecast and route before setting out.
