THE wheels are still in motion to create an off-road cycleway between Uley, Dursley and Cam, but plans looks set to take several more years to complete.

The scheme was launched in 2006 by local community organisation Vale Vision.

They hope to create a continuous route from Uley to Cam train station, mainly using the old railway track as a guide.

Although progress is slow some headway has been made with the project and Vale Vision trustee Bob Littleford is pleased to see some milestones reached.

The section of the cycleway in zone A of the Littlecombe development is complete at the Cam end of the site and the developers of the Draycott Business Park in Cam have just submitted a planning application for the cycleway that will join their site to Box Road.

"I am pleased to see the first part of the cycleway complete on the Littlecombe site, but there is still a long way to go," said Mr Littleford, a keen cyclist himself.

"We are very reliant on developments being completed which will create the links between the railway line. The important thing is that eventually it links up, it is no good having sections that don’t go anywhere."

The project is being coordinated by Vale Vision with the help of Dursley, Cam and Uley councils plus the county council and Sustrans, Bristol-based sustainable transport group.

It’s aim is to link the National Cycle Network at Slimbridge all the way through to Uley.

Vale Vision is still searching for a suitable route from Dursley to Uley, which Mr Littleford said was proving difficult.

"We feel this link from Uley is an important one. The cycleway is not just for leisure, our thoughts are that older children who go to Rednock could cycle from Uley, which would take a lot of cars off the road," said Mr Littleford.

"We have been very encouraged by the commitment to the project by all the local authorities and hopefully we will see it come to fruition."
