PEOPLE in Almondsbury have been showing Blitz spirit during the snow chaos, thanks to volunteers at the village shop.
Despite several inches of snow making many of Almondsbury’s roads impassable, workers at the Almondsbury Community Shop have been determined to make sure elderly residents have not suffered.
Alun Evans, chairman of the community shop, said: "It has been very difficult for many of the older people or infirm to get out. The council managed to grit the main road but the rest of the village has been really quite cut off.
"Customers coming in have been shopping for those who can’t get out. There has been a Blitz spirit in the village with everyone helping each other out.
"We have been making efforts with our regulars keeping them topped up and making sure they are alright.
"This is a community shop and the whole point of opening the shop was to help the residents out and that is what we have been doing."
Mr Evans said the Almondsbury Community Shop had seen a 60 percent increase in usage in the past week during the cold weather and as a consequence had increased the store's deliveries from its main suppliers to keep up with demand.
He said: "Fortunately our suppliers have been able to get through because the main road has been cleared. We have had more difficulty in getting our volunteers in but most of them have just walked.
"Many people still can't get their cars off their driveways so can't leave the village to get to a supermarket so we have been the obvious choice for people."
