SAINSBURY’S has asked its site staff to work extra hours to get the new Dursley supermarket built as quickly as possible.

It comes after complaints from people about the lengthy queues building up due to the temporary traffic lights in Castle Street.

At peak times motorists can wait over a quarter of an hour to get through the town, which is usually a two minute journey.

Both Gloucestershire Highways and Sainsbury’s have received complaints from people about the situation.

When asked by the Gazette when the work on the store was due to be completed, Sainsbury’s declined to give a specific date or month.

However Coryn Martin, Sainsbury’s project manager, said he had been working with the county highways department with a view to getting the project completed as soon as possible to minimise disruption.

He said: "A schedule of longer working hours and weekend working has been agreed that will speed up the highways improvement works in the run up to the store opening.

"The additional working hours should not cause additional disruption to motorists and pedestrians as temporary traffic lights and safety cones are in operation at all times, rather than just in working hours.

"We would like to thank residents and visitors to Dursley for their patience during the construction of the new Sainsbury’s. We look forward to completing the work and opening in Spring."
