Berkeley Town 4 Cam Bulldogs 0

BERKELEY charged into second place in the Northern Senior League Division One after ending their Cam hoodoo in some style on Saturday.

Town started the game with new signing Lee Mason in goal in place of their regular goalkeeper Terry Stevenson, who was on holiday, while Cam dropped injury doubt Jer Coborn to the bench, giving Sean Clune a first start since December.

On ten minutes, Cam's Danny McIntosh had a good chance with a header before Berkeley began to pile on the pressure.

Town were rewarded for their early endeavours on 15 minutes when a drilled cross from the left evaded the entire Cam defence and was turned in by youngster Ollie Clarke at the far post.

Not long afterwards, Berkeley went 2-0 ahead when Tim Beames shot from the edge of the box and, after a wicked deflection off Brad Price, the ball wrong-footed Ben Jagger and hit the back of the net.

Cam striker Jack Barnfield was then put clean through, but Mason smothered the ball to keep his clean sheet intact.

Then, from a Loz Dorman corner, Ian Cheshire just missed the target with a header.

In the second half, a Dorman free-kick to the far post found Price, who headed across the goal and wide when he should have scored.

The Bulldogs then made all three substitutions in a bid to get back into the game. Off went player-manager Stuart Grimwood, Clune and Barnfield, and on came Peter Holder, Jer Coburn and Paul Street.

But with Cam pressing for a way back into the game they were twice picked off on the break in the closing minutes.

Rich Langford made it 3-0 when his shot was blocked at point blank range by Jagger only for the ball to fly back past the keeper off the striker, who tucked away the rebound.

Beames then took advantage of a spill by Jagger to round the victory off with a fourth goal, as Berkeley followed up their win over Sharpness last week with another fine derby performance.

Afterwards, Cam manager Grimwood said: "The scoreline flattered Berkeley a little because we had as many chances. But it was the case that they took their chances and we did not.

"I wish them good luck for the rest of the season."

For Town, who had Gloucestershire county youth star Ollie Clarke in fine form, there was much to reflect on.

Manager Phil Orsbourne said: "Saturday's performance was another great one in terms of fitness and strength, and I was proud afterwards.

"Cam are a very good side and we made them look ordinary at times. We have now scored 42 goals and conceded four in our last ten league and cup games and are second in the league and in the semi-finals of the County Cup.

"But there is a long way to go and our feet are on the ground. Consistency is the key."
